Feedback
Karen asked us if we could play it to some children to get there feedback from it. Here is the feedback we got from it when we played it to 2 year olds.
Feedback from children
At the end of our interim critique we were queried about our target audience. One of our tutors thought that our show fitted the age group of two year olds. From our experience of working with children over the past few years we all knew that two year olds are very active and would not be able to sit still for long enough to listen to the show.
In order to prove our point we went to get feedback from two year olds. I got them to listen to each item separately and after each one I asked them what they liked about it and didn’t like about it. The responses I got were predictable.
Item One
This was the description game but it was cut down to only two descriptions
Response
When I asked child A if she liked it she responded ‘like it’ and would not elaborate. I asked her if she could remember some of the bugs that had been said and she thought for a while and then said ‘don’t know’
Child B had a similar response she also said that she liked it but she was unable to follow it properly. When she was listening to the item she looked confused and didn’t seem to take much of it in.
Item Two
This was the really long joke about slugs.
Response
Child A did not seem interested in this item. She was more interested in playing with some paper that was next to her than listening to the show. When I asked her if she liked it she looked really blank and replied ‘slug’ but did not understand the joke.
Child B laughed at the joke but when I asked her why it was funny she said ‘joke’. It was clear that she understands the concept of jokes and knew she should laugh but she did not actually understand the joke itself as she could not tell me what was funny other than the fact that it was a joke.
Item Three
Imagination Story – with calming music
Response
By the time this item had finished child A had walked off and I could not persuade her to come and listen to it again.
Child B swayed side to side to the music while listening but she did not know what happened in the story. She only responded to the calming music in the background. When I asked her if she liked the story she replied ‘yeah’ but it was said in a bored tone and did not seem interested any more.
Item Four
Michael Moth story
Response
Child B Did not listen to this story as she was bored of sitting down. Halfway through the story she said ‘can we stop now I want to go and play’. This showed that she could not understand or follow the show properly and as a result she did not see it as something fun to do.
Overall reflection
From getting two year olds to listen to our show we have been able to prove that they are too young for the content of the show and they are also too young to enjoy the radio experience.
I think that this shows that children younger then 3 are not really old enough to understand it. The reason that we wanted to look into this is because in the last interim crit we were asked if our target audience from 3-6 was to old and whether we should look at making it younger at 2-4 however we have played it to 2 year olds and they are not really old enough to understand it. Therefore we do not feel it is nesseccary tolower our target audience in such a way. Lisa-marie did this research so that we could find out whether children of a certain age would be responsive to it. We ran it past some of our friends children so that we knew what to expect from the children that would be our potential audience. I think this was a very good way for us to eliminate the feedback we had that the target audience was to old and that we should be aiming at younger.
I think that doing this has been very productive for us because it also gave us an idea whether children would respond well to it or not. I agree with Lisa-marie that our target audience is correct and that also we are doing a piece that is well geared towards the target audience.
